Coccidia Treatment

Posted on October 17, 2012

Coccidia can be a challenge to treat in alpacas due to their very sensitive nature – especially when it comes to taste! Treatments for Coccidia include Corid (Amprolium) in either pelleted or liquid form, Albon (Sulfa antibiotics), and Marquis (Ponazuril). Corid is the most commonly used treatment, and the liquid form is probably used the most. The label does indicate a treatment method for drinking water, but in the case of alpacas this is NOT a reliable way to treat due to their taste sensitivity. We recommend dosing each alpaca directly into the mouth, without dilution, at a rate of 5 mL per 100 pounds of body weight once a day for five (5) days.
