It’s hard to believe with all of this beautiful sunny weather, but Fall is upon us and it is time to start getting our herds ready for the wet weather! When it is cold and dark, external parasites, specifically lice, can become a significant problem. They typically affect only a few animals in a herd, but that can be a significant loss of processable fleece or fiber. But luckily, they are easy to prevent or treat. Our recommendation is to check each individual in the herd in October and apply a lice powder (our first recommendation is Zipcide) in October. If any animals were suspected of having lice, a second treatment is recommended. For those of us interested in maximizing usable fleece or fiber, this is an important step to insure a maximum fleece or fiber crop. If you have any questions regarding lice or would like to purchase Zipcide, please contact the office.
